You don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute, we read and write poetry because we are members of the human race
and the human race is filled with passion: medicine, law, business, engineering,
these are noble pursuits necessary to sustain life,
but poetry beauty, romance, love… these are what we stay alive for.
The quote from Whitman:
“Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,
Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,
– What good amid these, O me, O life?”
The answer? That you are here—that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.
That the powerful play goes on, and that you can contribute a verse, what will your verse be?
One of the most prominent brands in the world, Apple, recently came out with a beautifully inspiring advertisement drawing attention the unique exception of human life. Now granted, the sequences throughout the ad are meant to show the versatility associated with the I-Pad in an ultimate effort sell more products (and blow away the competition while they’re at it). With that said, we can’t ignore the ancient truths the Apple producers and designers have reminded us of, knowingly or unknowingly, through this advertisement.
You see, for some strange reason present day academia and science will tell us that man is no more than a glorified beast of the field, and that our passions and ingenuity are really a mirage. Do not be fooled by this arrogance.
The Bible says man is created in the image of God according His likeness. Humanity is creation’s highest order. This is what separates mankind from the rest of creation; we are creatures with living souls. Our mind and bodies were fashioned in such a way as to exclusively resemble the living God. Monkeys and dolphins do not build architectural masterpieces or compose brilliant literary works of novel and poetry. You don’t see dogs or birds designing adorning clothing or composing musical tour de forces that shake us to our core. When is the last time a group of sea turtles or lions gathered together to fellowship and celebrate the uniting of groom and bride? Man was given a beautiful mind to properly reflect and discover the Creator of it all. Our lives have measureless meaning. Don’t let the world system blind you to this fact.
Whether Apple realizes it or not, I believe their ad is a tacit proclamation of man’s extraordinary nature which can serve as a forerunner to the reality intelligent design.
For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made,
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
