There’s been a recent study published by two teams of scientists which has been widely reported on over the past several days. The experiments found that the blood from young mice reverses aging in old mice. Their discoveries say that the compounds of youthful blood actually rejuvenate and regenerate functionality in the ailing bodies of older mice. The younger blood was shown to improve muscle structure, increase strength, endurance, and brain activity of the aged mice.
“I am extremely excited,” said Rudolph Tanzi, a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the research. “These findings could be a game changer.”
Potential progress in this area of research could unlock treatments for cardiac disease, neurodegeneration and muscle wasting according to Amy Wagers of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.
Time will tell the whether or not these findings will effectively correlate to the human body, but one thing remains: there has always been a certain mystical quality to the nature of blood.
For centuries cultures have esteemed blood in the most sacred of manners. Blood was believed to hold a particular power and sustenance to it that motivated people to practices from bloodletting to human sacrifices. In many traditions, blood was applied on the bodies of men and women during rituals and ceremonies. Why the fascination?
Today, we know from modern scientific understanding that blood is absolutely critical to life. Blood works directly with cells to coordinate the operations of different body parts, tissues and organs. There are also vital chemical messengers in the blood called hormones that initiate systematic feedback sequences to maintain the body’s functionality. Blood circulates oxygen and proteins that our bodies need in order to survive and reproduce; it plays a major role in fighting infection and supports our immune system. Astonishingly, blood actually possesses a highly complex system of cascades that anticipates and repairs malfunctions like exterior and interior blood clotting. It’s easy to appreciate the marvelous design and purpose blood demonstrates in a creature’s body.
We see how The Lord created blood to play such an essential role in our lives, but the question I’m left with is why? What is the supernatural connotation of blood and what gives it its significance?
The Bible tells us the unblemished, uncorrupted blood has the divine power of atonement. So it seems to correspond that the blood of any young creature subject to our space-time reality would possess a higher quality that is less corrupted than a creature of older age, which is why the experiments revealed what they did regarding the younger mice.
How ironic, only recently has secular science come to understand the true significance of blood, whereas our Master Craftsman and Creator God, Yahweh, disclosed through Moses thousands of years ago that blood was the key to life.
Leviticus 17:11 states, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.”
It’s beautifully apparent what this verse is alluding to that would take place thousands of years later on a wooden cross atop Golgotha. Nevertheless the Old Testament covenant conveys the same truth: Blood represents life. For the life of any creature depends on its blood. Even the various pagan cultures throughout world history understood the fundamental power of blood. Although their darkened understanding, through blood rituals and human sacrifices unto the demonic, was a gross perversion of its true application, they still recognize blood’s inherent dynamism.
We see from the verse in Leviticus not only does blood sustain the physical life of a creature; it also has the mysterious supernatural ability to shield and transform the spiritual life of a man. The nature of blood extends past the natural to the spiritual dimension of reality. It can be thought of that the supernature of blood gives vitality to blood in its natural state. We know this according to our biblical worldview which reveals the entire physical universe sits immersed in the greater reality of the invisible, spiritual realm. This same principle is at work regarding the structure and function of blood. This leads us to the climax of this account and back to the Cross.
Do you understand why the blood of our Kinsman Redeemer, Christ Jesus, has the power that it does? If the youthful compounds in the blood of a simple creature like a mouse can rejuvenate the life of its elder, think of how much more valuable the blood of the creature made in the Most High God’s image is. And finally, multiplied a thousand fold, think about how precious and mighty the perfect blood of a God-man is.
This is one reason why Jesus had to embody flesh in order to save us. Father, Son and Spirit understood that only through the supremely excellent value of the blood of a God would an ample atonement be met to mend the cosmic predicament of The Fall. Only the immaculate, supernatural blood of Jesus has the power to cure the supernatural problem of sin so deeply innate in the souls of men. Only God could suffer the wrath of God and survive. How great are the depths of the love of Jesus, who descended from the highest heavens to the soils of Earth to take the form of a man, offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for you and me! Oh the wonderful life that is found in the blood of Jesus. All praise and honor to Him and Him alone!
“ Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.” -Hebrews 2:14-17 NIV
Behold, the beautiful blood of Immanuel is evermore at work today. By it not only are the sick made well, but by it the dead are raise to life; both spiritually and naturally. The world has never seen a power so great, a power that dissolves strongholds and makes even the darkest world rulers shudder. And this same power is offered as a free gift to all who ask. The blood of the Most High Morning Star, Jesus, can instantly cleanse you of all sin and guilt and seal your destiny with Him in Paradise. From there His indwelling life is made yours by His Spirit, and your real life will begin.
